Why do I need a SAM registration?
Businesses need one because SAM is the government’s official database for organizations that want to do business with federal agencies or receive federal funding such as grants or loans. Keeping the registration active ensures your eligibility for awards. It is essential for competing for federal contracts, receiving financial assistance, increasing visibility to contracting officers, and verifying business information and credibility.
Do I have to pay?
If you complete the registration or SBA profile on your own, it is free. However, many businesses choose to pay for professional help because the process can be tedious, detailed, time-consuming, and frustrating. How long does the process take?
The timeline depends on how prepared the business is. The application itself typically takes 1–5 business days, while government processing and validations can take 1–10 business days. What are a UEI and CAGE number?
These are two important identifiers when doing business with the U.S. federal government. A UEI, or Unique Entity Identifier, is a 12-character alphanumeric ID assigned to businesses that replaced the DUNS number in 2022. CAGE, or Commercial and Government Entity Code, is a 5-character identifier for businesses in SAM. Both help identify your business across federal agencies and as a government contractor. Businesses outside the U.S. typically receive an NCAGE code before completing registration.
